A great trophy begins in the field: 
Proper Field care is essential. 

1.  Leave at least 4 inches of hide behind the shoulder. 
2.  NEVER cut the throat, brisket or neck. 
3.  Avoid dragging the animal if at all possible.  
     If necessary, drag by antlers and keep head, neck and shoulders off the ground. 
4.  Cut the hide around the body 4-6 inches behind the shoulders. 
5.  Cut the skin around the legs just above the knees. 
6.  Make a cut up the back of the legs to previous cut around body (#4). 
7.  Peel the skin forward to the head. 
8.  Cut through the neck and spinal column appx 3-4 inches below the head/neck union. 
9.  Keep the cape cold and dry.  Store in freezer inside a plastic bag.
